The Public DNS Service

Introduction

The Public DNS Service is a public service provided by Granite Canyon Group, LLC. The Service offers both primary and secondary DNS free of charge to anyone who asks. The Service maintains UPS protected FreeBSD servers that satisfy DNS queries. The servers are geographically separated and all are connected to the Internet via 7x24 dedicated lines with disjoint routes to the Internet's North American backbones.

The Public DNS is useful if you:

• Can't get free service from an ISP and don't want to do it yourself
• Need secondary DNS servers
• Need MX records for a virtual domain
• Want control over your DNS records: change DNS frequently, changing ISPs soon
• Are inside of a firewall and need publicly-accessible name servers outside of your firewall
• Need name servers that are closer to the North American Internet backbones

How does it work?

For Published Primary DNS you need to perform five steps. If you already have a registered domain, you can skip the first two. If you only need an MX record, you can skip the last one.

Find an unused domain name.

Register it.

Create a primary Public DNS account.

Delegate the domain.

Re-delegate the in-addr domain.

For Unpublished Primary or Secondary DNS you need to perform three steps.

Authorize ns1 and ns2.granitecanyon.com to perform zone xfers from your primary nameserver.

Create a secondary Public DNS account.

Delegate the domain.

How does your billing system work?

Here's how the billing cycle works:

• When you make a purchase - we add 'zone credits' to your account
• When a domain is added to the system, your account is debited by 1 and the start date is set on the domain
• Just like when you buy a domain name, this debit is permanent unless you delete it within a few days.
• Every time 1 year or 200MB of usage is used (1 million DNS queries), 1 debit is added to your account for the zone
• Extra (third, fourth) nameservers hosted by ZoneEdit cost an extra 'zone credit' (1) per year
• Failover monitor service costs an extra 'zone credit' (1) per year
• Backup mail service also costs an extra 'zone credit' (1) per year
• When the number of debits exceeds the number of credits in your account, we will send a reminder notice to the billing contact listed on your account.
• After 30 days we will send several warning messages to both contacts listed.
• We will never turn off an account until 30 days have passed after we have sent warning messages

*FREE accounts are ones where the usage is less than 200MB per domain, and there have been fewer than 5 domains added to the account, and no premium services have been used. Only the first 5 domain names added to your account are free.
